The association is dedicated to advancing the practice of whirling dance (also known as Sufi whirling) and its associated meditation in Finland. To achieve this goal, the association organizes courses, workshops, performances, and various events centered around this captivating dance form. The term ”Whirling dance” refers to one of the oldest active meditation methods, guiding participants to concentrate solely on the act of rotation. Through this practice, dancers immerse themselves in the present moment, diverting their focus from past or future concerns.
Beyond these activities, the association actively seeks and fosters collaborations with artists and other entities whose work or interests align closely with the theme of rotation or rotary motion. This may include endeavors such as throwing clay on wheel or engaging in whirling acrobatics.
In recent studies, it has been shown that spinning movements evoke a more calming feeling where translational movements (back and forth) promote more of an alertness. It can be observed that all humans, in particular children, seek movements that are associated with vestibular stimulation (such as swinging, spinning) and feel positive emotions as a result of these movements. Engagement in rotary movements causes the brain waves to slow down and observing rotary activities such as whirling dance, or any other rotary art form can cause the same effect for the brain.
By cultivating partnerships with like-minded individuals and organizations, the association aims to enrich and expand the understanding and appreciation of whirling and rotary art forms and its enchanting, meditative aspects.
